Short-Term Running Goals:

Now that I'm (almost for sure) done having all the babies, I'm working on building consistency and seeing how fast I can get in my old age. ;)

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'd like to be a healthy and relatively injury-free runner for the rest of my life.

Personal:

I'm married to Eric (Faceless Ghost on the blog) and we have very active daughters and one dog. I have a PhD in sociology and demography, and I'm incredibly grateful to have work that is meaningful and that builds on my academic experience. I run because it makes me feel strong and it helps to keep the crazy away (there is a long history of abuse and mental illness in my extended family).

Last year when I ran this race I had moved back to Utah from Pennsylvania two days earlier, and I was still feeling really sad and sorry for myself about leaving all my friends. Over the past few days I've been feeling really grateful about how the last year has gone, and I'm amazed at the comparison between how sad I was then and how happy I am now.

Anyway, the race went pretty well. My realistic goal was to be faster than I was at the flat 10K in February, and my dream goals were to be under 45 minutes and in the top 10%. I don't yet know how I did compared to anyone else, but according to my watch (a few seconds faster than the finish-line clock) I was over a minute under my dream time goal.

I'm not sure if I was too fast at the start. Eric and I have been talking about it - he says it's better to pace one's self and not go out too fast, but I always get that adrenaline thing at the beginning and wonder why not take advantage of it and bank time for later. I did think about trying to keep it kind of comfortable, but it was also hard because of the big downhills at the beginning. After two miles I felt kind of tired, but I tried to pretend it was a 5K and thought about how cool it would be if I did a 5K with all my miles under 7 minutes (didn't happen). Then I got distracted along South Temple watching two guys with double strollers (one of them took over the other guy's stroller for a bit and then almost lost them both). That took up another mile, and then we were on the parade route and almost done. The only part of the race that really sucked was the stretch up 900 S, but even that was only a few minutes.

At the finish line I found out that Eric had made his goal too, so it was a good race for both of us. I hope everything went as well for all the other FRBers.

Nice job on the race! That is one heck of a time and a great PR!!! I wonder what was up with the stroller guys, that is ODD.

I tend to take off too fast in races as well, but it serves me well. It is just my style. I never pull back, I just GO!!! You did great, so maybe it just works for you!

Enjoy the rest of your day.

It's SO hard to hold back those downhills! If you were in a marathon it might bust your energy, but a 10K I'm with you...bank it for later :)

GREAT job on the AMAZING PR and having a wonderful year here in Utah! "Annual" races always help me reflect on what has happened the last year.

Oh, and AMEN on the last stretch up to the finish, gets me every time too!

I feel like I'm the prime beneficiary of your return to Utah ;)

Congratulations on your great race today. I'm proud of you.

We finished about the same time (I was at 43:37). I too got distracted by the guys with the strollers. One of them ran by me without any trouble at all. That's always humbling. Anyways, nice job. Maybe I'll see you at the next one.
